What Temperature Are Women’s Overalls Good For? A Guide to Choosing the Right Style
Choosing the right pair of overalls for the weather can make a huge difference when you're spending long days outside, working in the barn, or riding in changing temperatures.
At DFR, we have three main overall styles: Insulated, Unlined Canvas, and Quick Dry. Each one has a different level of warmth and works best in different conditions.
While there isn't one exact temperature where you need to switch from one style to another, we've put together this guide based on the fabrics and feedback we've received from women wearing them in real working conditions.

Keep in mind that temperature isn't the only thing that affects how warm you'll feel. Wind, activity level, what you're wearing underneath, and whether you're working outside or inside a barn can all make a difference.
Â
Insulated Canvas Overalls: For Cold Weather
If you're on the Canadian prairies, the upper Midwest, or are simply cold-blooded: these are for you!
Insulated canvas overalls are our warmest option. The heavy canvas helps block the wind, while the cozy 140 gram quilted lining adds another layer of warmth without making the overalls feel overly bulky.
They're designed for cold weather work, barn chores, riding, and those days when winter isn't going to stop you from getting things done.
And yes, the gals out west have put them to the test in -30 °C (-20°F)!
For especially cold temperatures, layering is still important. A good base layer and warm top underneath your overalls can help you adjust as the temperature changes throughout the day.
Best for:
Cold winter weather
Outdoor work
Winter barn chores
Riding in colder temperatures
Anyone who tends to get cold easily
Â
Unlined Canvas Overalls: The Most Versatile Option
If you're looking for one pair of overalls that can work across multiple seasons, unlined canvas is truly the most versatile investment.
Made from heavy, 16 oz canvas, these overalls help block the wind while still giving you the flexibility to layer underneath as temperatures change.
We find that many ladies wear this style between 0°C–10°C (32°F–50°F), but they can easily be used outside of that range depending on your layers and activity level.
On colder days, add a thermal base layer, sweatshirt, or other warm layers underneath. As the weather warms up, you can wear lighter layers for a more comfortable fit.
Best for:
Spring and fall
Cooler summer days
Mild winter weather with layers
Riding
Barn and farm work
Anyone looking for a year-round canvas option
Â
Quick Dry Overalls: For Warm Weather and Layering
Quick Dry Overalls were originally designed for warmer weather, but we've heard of customers who wear them all year round.
They're especially popular with customers who work in warmer environments. Many dairy farmers, in particular, have shared that they wear Quick Dry Overalls throughout the winter, layering sweatpants or other warm clothing underneath.
If you easily overheat, can't stand feeling restricted, or work in a warmer barn during the winter, these are for you!
The lightweight, stretchy fabric makes them a great option when you want the coverage of overalls without the weight of heavier canvas.
Best for:
Mild to warm weather
Summer work
Warmer barns
High-activity work
People who tend to overheat
Layering underneath in cooler conditions
Â
So, Which Overalls Should You Choose?
Think about where you'll be wearing your overalls most often.
If you're working outside in cold winter weather: Insulated Canvas is your best starting point.
If you want something versatile for changing seasons: Unlined Canvas gives you a heavier canvas layer without the added insulation, making it easy to adjust your warmth with layers.
If you work in a warm barn or tend to overheat: Quick Dry gives you a lightweight option that can still be layered when needed.
And remember, you don't necessarily need to switch styles the moment the temperature changes. Many of our customers adjust how they wear their overalls by changing the layers underneath.

Please note: Temperature references are a general guide based on customer experiences, not an official temperature rating or guarantee. Comfort will vary based on activity level, wind, layering, and individual preference!
Â
One More Thing: Think About Your Activity Level
The same pair of overalls can feel completely different depending on what you're doing.
Someone mucking stalls, carrying feed, or working cattle may feel warmer than someone standing around outside for hours. Similarly, a heated or enclosed barn can feel very different from working outside in the wind.
That's why we recommend thinking about your typical work environment, activity level, and how you personally handle the cold when choosing your overall style.
At the end of the day, the best overall is the one that lets you stay comfortable enough to keep doing what you love, whether that's working the farm, getting chores done, or spending a winter day in the arena.

Plus Size Overalls: Understanding Our New DFR Size Names
Confused by DFR’s new plus size names? Learn how our old and new sizes correspond, including XXL, 1X, 2X, 3X and 4X, with no change to the fit.
A Quick Update to Our Plus Size Naming
We've recently changed the naming of our sizes beyond XL to make our sizing easier to understand and eliminate confusion between our XXL and 2X sizes. The fit and measurements have not changed, only the names!
If you've purchased DFR overalls before, you may notice different size names during this transition. We've put together this guide to show how our old and new sizing conventions correspond.

Same fit, just different naming!Â
If you have absolutely any questions about the new naming convention, or would like assistance finding your size, please email us at hello@dfrwear.com. As always, we offer free shipping on size exchanges to ensure that you find the perfect fit!
Â
Why Did DFR Change the Size Names?
We made this change to make our extended sizing more consistent and easier to understand. Our previous naming system used both XXL and 2X, which could make it unclear whether they referred to the same size.
Nothing about the garment fit or measurements has changed. If you previously wore an XXL, you are now looking for a DFR 2X.
Â
What Size Should I Order?
If you're shopping DFR for the first time, we recommend choosing your size based on your body measurements rather than the size you normally wear in another brand. Different brands use different measurements and fits.
Not sure where to start? Check out our Women’s Overalls Fit & Size Guide for instructions on measuring yourself and choosing the right DFR size.
Â
What If I Previously Wore XXL, 1X, 2X, etc.?
Previously wore XXL? → Look for DFR 2XPreviously wore 1X? → Look for DFR 3XPreviously wore 2X? → Look for DFR 4XPreviously wore 3X? → Look for DFR 5XPreviously wore 4X? → Look for DFR 6X
The fit and measurements have not changed. This update only changes what we call the sizes. If you previously purchased one of these sizes and it fit you well, you should look for the corresponding new DFR size.

Overalls FAQ
Finding workwear that actually fits women shouldn't be complicated. That's why we created this guide. Here at DFR, our overalls are designed by women, for women, and we're here to help you find the pair that's right for you. Whether you're riding, doing barn chores, or need some professional looking workwear, we'll walk you through sizing, inseam lengths, fit, and the differences between our Quick Dry, Canvas, and Insulated styles so you can shop with confidence.
Â
How to Measure YourselfÂ
To measure yourself, start with your waist, thigh and hips. Keep the tape measure snug but not tight. For overalls, your waist measurement is often the most critical factor, so ensure you measure at the widest part of your torso.
Waist
Measure around the narrowest part of your natural waistline, keeping the tape level all the way around.
Hip
Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat while standing naturally.
Thigh
Measure around the fullest part of your upper thigh for the most comfortable fit through the leg.
💡 Pro tip: Always measure over the base layer you plan to wear most often under your overalls. If you layer up in winter, measure with a hoodie on, you'll thank yourself later!
Â
Finding the Right Fit?
The right fit often comes down to personal preference and how you plan to wear your overalls.
Some women prefer a more fitted feel through the waist and hips, while others like a little extra room for layering and freedom of movement. Neither is wrong! The best fit is the one that feels the most comfortable to you!
Prefer a More Fitted Feel?
If you like a more tailored look, your overalls should sit comfortably through the waist and hips without feeling restrictive. You should still be able to squat, bend, and ride comfortably, but with a fit that feels a little closer to the body.
Prefer More Room?
Some women choose a roomier fit, especially if they plan to layer underneath during colder months. A little extra room can make a big difference when you're wearing hoodies, thermal layers, or heavier clothing while working or riding in the winter.
Finding Your Sweet Spot
No matter which fit you prefer, your overalls should allow you to move comfortably throughout the day. You shouldn't feel pulling across the hips, strain on the straps, or restriction when sitting in the saddle. At the same time, they shouldn't feel so oversized that excess fabric gets in the way while you're working.
Â
Compare Our Styles
Not sure which pair is right for you? Every style is designed for women, but each one is built for a different purpose. Whether you're looking for something lightweight for summer chores, durable enough for riding, or perfect for year-round wear, here's a breakdown of each style to help you find your perfect fit.
Women's Quick Dry Overalls
If you've ever wished your barn clothes felt a little more like your favourite leggings, these are for you.
Our Quick Dry Overalls are made from a lightweight nylon-spandex fabric that feels like Lululemon for the barn. They're breathable, stretchy, water-resistant, hair-repellent, and designed to keep you comfortable during long days of chores, grooming, or working around the farm.
One of the biggest advantages of this style is the comfort. The fabric moves with you, and the open-back design provides extra airflow during warmer weather, making them a favourite for spring and summer.
While they're perfect for barn chores, grooming, dairy work, livestock care, and other agricultural jobs, this isn't the style we recommend for riding. The lightweight fabric simply isn't designed for the wear and tear of time in the saddle.
If comfort is your top priority and you're looking for a warm-weather overall you'll reach for day after day, the Quick Dry Overalls are hard to beat.
Women's Unlined Canvas Overalls
If you're looking for a pair of overalls that can do a little bit of everything, this is the style we recommend most often.
Made from durable 16 oz canvas, our Unlined Canvas Overalls are built for work while still being designed specifically for women. They're fitted to highlight your waist while allowing room through the hips, with seams in all the right places for comfort and movement throughout the day.
Unlike our Quick Dry styles, the canvas fabric offers more structure and durability, making it a great choice for everyday farm work, ranch life, and time spent in the saddle. The unlined design makes them a versatile, year-round option that can be worn on their own in warmer weather or layered during cooler months.
Features like our reinforced crotch gusset, functional pockets, and signature two-tone colour combinations are designed with both practicality and style in mind.
If riding is part of your daily routine, these are the overalls we'd recommend. The durable canvas fabric stands up well to life in the saddle while providing the comfort and mobility needed for long days in the barn, on the farm, or out on the trail.
Women's Insulated Overalls
Cold weather doesn't mean your riding goals have to wait.
Our Insulated Overalls are built from the same durable 16 oz canvas as our Unlined Canvas styles, with a warm 140g quilted lining added for those chilly mornings, winter chores, and long days at the arena.
Designed specifically for women, they're fitted to highlight your waist while allowing room through the hips, with seams in all the right places for comfort and movement. The insulation keeps you warm without feeling overly bulky, so you can still move freely whether you're working around the farm or climbing into the saddle.
For riders, details matter. That's why we offer longer inseam options and zippered leg styles, making it easier to wear your overalls comfortably with your favourite riding or winter boots.
If you spend your winters outdoors, these are the overalls you'll be glad you grabbed on the way out the door.
Inseam LengthsÂ
We offer a variety of inseam lengths (28", 30", 33", and 35") to accommodate different heights, so you can choose a length that feels comfortable. To find your inseam, measure from the crotch seam to the bottom of your ankle.
Tip: if you wear insulated mucking boots or some cute cowboy boots we offer a zippered leg option in our Insulated canvas styles!
Common Sizing Questions
Should I size up for layering?
Consider how you plan to wear your overalls. If you intend to wear heavy hoodies or sweaters underneath your overalls, we recommend sizing up. For those who prefer a slimmer fit with just a base layer or t-shirt, sticking to your true measured size will provide a more tailored fit.
We recommend trying on your overalls with the layers you'd normally wear underneath to ensure the best fit. Take a few minutes to sit, squat, bend, and move around in them so you can feel confident they're comfortable.
How should overalls fit?
Your overalls should feel comfortable, functional, and easy to move in without feeling too tight or restrictive.
What if I'm between sizes?
If you're between sizes, we usually recommend sizing up for a more comfortable fit, especially if you plan on layering underneath during cooler seasons. Choosing the larger size can also provide extra room for movement while working or riding.
For a more formfitting option with lightweight layers, some customers prefer their true size. If you're unsure, compare your measurements to our size chart or reach out to us for help!
Â
Overalls FAQ
Are your overalls good for riding?
Yes! Our Unlined Canvas and Insulated Overalls are both designed with riding in mind. They feature durable fabric, functional pockets, and inseam options that make them comfortable in the saddle.
Do you offer different inseam lengths?
Yes, we offer multiple inseam lengths so you can choose what fits your height and riding needs best. We also offer zippered leg options on our Insulated styles for easier wear over boots.
What is your exchange policy?
Unworn items with tags intact may be exchanged for a different size or returned for a full refund within 30 days of purchase. Items with visible wear will not be eligible to an exchange or refund. Please try on overalls in a clean environment to ensure they will be eligible for an exchange or refund.
How do I care for and wash my overalls?
For our Canvas and Insulated Overalls, we recommend washing cold and hanging to dry to help maintain the colour and extend the life of the fabric. That said, they are pre-shrunk, so if they do end up in the dryer, they'll still be just fine!
For our Quick Dry Overalls, they're as easy as the name suggests. A quick wash and hang dry is all it takes! They dry fast and are ready to get back to work in no time!

Riding Through The Cold
Let’s be honest, staying motivated to ride in the winter can be tough. When it gets dark so early, even the most dedicated of us start to second guess heading to the barn.
For me, the worst part used to be my knees. No matter what I wore: fleece-lined jeans, thermal leggings, you name it. I'd end up frozen halfway through the ride and ache the whole drive home. It’s hard to focus on not only your horse but your goals, when you’re cold and miserable.
But here’s the thing… I didn’t want to spend half the year waiting for spring to chase my goals. So, we started working on something that would make winter rides actually enjoyable. We made Insulated overalls that you can ride in!
They’ve got elastic straps that move with you and the fit makes it super easy to layer underneath. The canvas fabric feels just like your riding in your favourite pair of denim jeans, only warmer and honestly, way more durable.
My favourite thing? There’s a cellphone pocket that’s actually usable from the saddle. No more awkward stretching or digging through jacket layers when you need to check your phone. Truth be told, I find myself missing this when it's back to jeans season in the spring!
Now, you don’t have to dread winter rides! You might still have to convince yourself to leave the warm house some mornings but the overalls definitely make cold days better.
Because there’s no need to put your riding goals on pause for the winter.

Maternity Overalls for the Farm
Why don’t maternity overalls exist for women on the farm? We asked the same question and decided to do something about it. Just because you’re growing your family doesn’t mean you should have to wear your husband’s overalls or buy a completely separate pair.
As a women’s workwear brand, we’re committed to making gear that’s inclusive, functional, and confidence boosting for every stage of life, including pregnancy.
Our Cultivated Design
Our Maternity Fit Add-On is available with any purchase of our unlined or insulated canvas overalls. We’ve designed this thoughtful option to allow you to keep wearing your favorite DFR overalls throughout pregnancy and beyond.
Custom modification done by our local seamstress Nancy
Soft-sided heavy-duty velcro is sewn to the inside of your bibs
A 4" elastic maternity band with hard-sided Velcro gives you the adjustable stretch where you need it most!
When pregnancy and postpartum are complete, just remove the band and wear your overalls like normal no compromise on style or function
Please Note!
You may find the side zippers don’t close fully as your belly grows. We recommend wearing shorts or tights underneath to stay covered and comfortable.
Overalls with the maternity add-on are made to order and take approximately 3 weeks to be modified and shipped
Designed with Care
You asked, and we listened. This add-on was inspired by real women like you who needed a better option. Creating maternity workwear was a natural next step for us at DFR. From the start, we’ve been dedicated to designing women’s workwear for every chapter of life.Â
